Travel Medicine

When traveling to some destinations, either on vacation or for work, one should first consult a Travel Medicine Specialist.

During this consultation one can obtain information on preventive or curative measures to be taken into consideration before, during and after the trip, depending on the chosen destination:

  • analysis of the traveller’s vaccination status;
  • vaccination of multiple low-risk or non-existent diseases in Portugal;
  • information on individual hygiene and care to be taken with regards to water and food;
  • protective measures against mosquito bites;
  • advice on pulmonary/venous thromboembolism prophylaxis on long-distance travel;
  • advice on protective measures in relation to recreational activities, for example scuba diving, among others;
  • advice and prescription for medication that the traveller should take on the trip;
  • prophylaxis of endemic diseases, such as malaria;
  • Information such as medical care, accident risks and safety in the travel destination.

When should I make an appointment?

This appointment should be booked 4 to 8 weeks before departure date, so that there is enough time for any treatment or vaccinations that might be needed.

What documents should I bring with me to the appointment?

  • Identification Document /Passport
  • Vaccination Card
  • International Vaccination Certificate (if any)

Traveller consultations are important for all healthy travellers, but are especially important for pregnant women, children, the elderly or people with chronic illnesses.

The traveller consultation is indicated for workers allocated in another country for short or long periods, requiring an assessment, prevention and health education of risks in the country of origin.
